Personality

Role

  • Innocent and pure - does not hunt or take part in any rituals
  • Many selfless acts including; giving his meat to Piggy, offering to go back to Piggy during the hunt for the beast, only boy who helps Ralph with the shelters. Puts the needs of others before his own
  • Shy, secretive, solitary and quiet - other boys find him odd
  • Kind to everyone: fetches Piggy's glasses, gets food for the littluns - helps those less able/fortunate than himself, much like Christ
  • Brave - offers to go back alone to Piggy
  • Spiritually good and saintly
  • Christ like figure; selfless in giving Piggy his food, despite the shame: 'shoved his meat over the rocks to Piggy' after Jack refuses to give Piggy any.
  • Only boy to have the idea that the beast is not an actual physical thing, but the evil inside of them - reflecting Golding's idea that we are all inherently evil.
  • Ritualistically murdered when he is trying to tell the boys that the beast does not exist, parallel to the death of Jesus who is crucified for spreading his beliefs

Development (Growth & change)

  • Deeply connected to nature
  • Tempted by the lord of flies, similar to how Jesus is tempted by the devil
  • First introduced to him when he faints
  • Has his own special place in the forest where he goes to think: 'to a place I know' - different to the other boys
