Harold Godwinson's battle advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

Fighting on home ground
Had housecarls - very experienced soldiers
Harold had the best position on the battle field (on top of a hill with marshes both sides)

Disadvantages

The fyrd were badly disciplined and inexperienced
His army was tired from walking the length of the country after the Danish invasion
He lacked archers that proved vital to the Norman success

Evaluation

Harold lost the Battle of Hastings despite being in a better position on the battle field and having good, loyal soldiers
