German Revolution

Causes

  • The War was about to be won by the Allies
  • 2nd October -General Ludendorf tells Parliment that Germany couldn't win the war
  • Allies offered peace if Germany were to become more democratic - Kaiser was practically a dictator
  • 40,000 sailors ally with dockers - set up workers and soldiers council take the dockyard in Kiel on 4th November
  • Thousands of Germans led by Kurt Eisner, march into the capital of Bavaria - Munich on 7th November
  • Eisner set up a workers and peasant council declaring Bavaria a peoples state - 8th November
  • Kaiser Wilhelm agrees to abdicate 9th November
  • Kaiser Wilhelm fled to Holland on 10th November
  • 11th November- Armistice was agreed, meaning they had to withdraw all land won in the war

Effects

  • Kaiser Wilhelm agrees to abdicate on 9th November and flees to Holland on the 10th
  • Armistice agreed on 11th November
  • Land won in the war had to be withdrawn
  • During 1919 the Wiemar republic was established - a proportanial represented government elected by over 20s, Chancellor in chargeof reichstag  and needed half of it to vote for. The President could rule through decree in emergency.
  • Diktat and Dolchstoss myths began to spread

Overall summary

Germany's war effort was about to be defeated and only a democratic Germany would allow peace,therefore the German people had to take action and forced the Kaiser to abdicate, with a democratic system in place an armistice was agreed and Weimar rpublic established
