Kambili is desperate for love from her father and her main desire is to make her father proud. 

Papa/Eugene is a symbol in his home for a military dictator, like the one destroying the country. 

Eugene and Papa Nnukwu's relationship links with post colonialism. Eugene despises father, despite his father loving him. Opposite with Kambili. 

Eugene has the best intentions for his children.
