discuss the psychodynamic approach of psychology

?

discuss the psychodynaimc approach of pscyhcology

Advantages

  • POINT- one strenght of the psychodynaimc approach is that it uses cases studies to support its claims.
  • FOR EXAMPLE/ BECUASE- for example the little hans cases study- which supported Freuds oepdius complex. In this study Freud would be sent letters from little hans father, discussing Little hans dreams and behaviours. By the age of 5 little hans developed a phobia of horses, where he would fear the horse biting him. hans and his father uses to play horsing riding games- therefore freud conculed that the horse was symbolic of his father , and the fear of the horses(father) biting him (castrating him) was a punishment for having desires for his mother. the phobia was a displcament for his true anxiety towards his father. little hans latter on began to identify with his father and his morals (the development of the superego)
  • SO WHAT- therefore the study provides supporting evidence for the psychodynamic approach- specially the Oedipus complex. in addition, this study shows the impact of childhood expierences on later development, therefore this strengthens the cases for child protection laws and shows the importance's of socialisation
  • COUNTER- however, there are many criticisms of the little Hans cases study. for example Freud only met the boy once in a therapeutic setting, meaning liuttle hans father collected all of the information for Freud meaning that it could of been potentially bias. in addition to this Freud had published his psychosexual stages before the analysis took place, meaning that his conclusions from the research may of been heavily bias- he may of been looking for evidence which supports his claims. therefore the little Hans study can be argued as not being a reliable source of evidence to support the psychodynamic approach

Disadvantages

  • POINT- one strength of the psychodynamic approach is that it has real life application.
  • FOR EXAMPLE/BECAUSE- the psychodynamic approach has lead to successful methods for treatments in mental health disorders, especially in depression and anxiety- such as psychoanalysis which has helps treat the root causes of the issue, whilst biological treatments, such as drug therapy can only treat the symptoms of the disorder- meaning that the treatment is only shwoing miminal short term improvements.
  • SO WHAT- therefore the psychodynamic approach has useful real life application, which is has better long term effects in successfully treating the phobias than drug therapy.
  • COUNTER- however, Freuds concepts are untestable. Many of freuds concepts are associated with the role of the unconscious, which can not be tested empirically meaning that Freuds concepts are unreliable.
