Direct Democracy

Direct Democracy

Advantages

  • This allows the people's voices to be heard completely as they, themselves, decide what decisions should be made.
  • It increases the legitimacy of an act, law or bill that has, or will be, passed.
  • It can avoid deadlock or delay within the political system.

Disadvantages

  • People don't have the time to pursue a career and earn a living and make decisions on what should be law.
  • People may be swayed by short-term, emotional appeals by charismatic individuals.
  • Some of the issues raised may simply be too complex for the ordinary citizen to understand.

Evaluation

Direct democracy would be a particularly good form of democracy as it would totally ensure that the people are heard and give the power where it belongs: to the people. However, this would require the time to decide every, minute detail of bills that must be made into laws. This would be too time consuming and as such, would be unrealistic. In conclusion, this system would be good, but only for certain decisions like national and international events and occurrences.
