Conservatism continues to place a high value of patriotism and tradition' Discuss

Basing my essay outline on a YES/NO theme rather than advantages/disadvantages. Please don't be put off due to the fact it says advantages and disadvantages, I just find it a good layout :)

Conservatism continues to place a high value of patriotism and tradition' Discuss

Advantages

  • REMEMBER, the word continues is assuming that the conservatives have done previously so it is good to mention previous examples or debate it so you have something to compare it with now
  • Thatcher can be seen as a conservative leader whom placed very strong emphasis on these values; can be seen in her promotion of nuclear families, banning of promoting homosexuality, sceptic of the eu and the falklands war
  • Cameron today is still very sceptic of the eu and is being tighter on immigration, these show that patriotism is still key in British conservatism
  • Strong support for the monarchy and the church within the conservatives can still be recognised and has held that strong emphasis since Edmund Burke in early age of conservatism

Disadvantages

  • The Conservative party today can be described as being more pragmatic rather than ideological and so in some ways these main concepts have less value placed upon them and the Cameron is linked to one-nation conservatism
  • David Cameron has accepted gay marriages which is against tradition but is pragmatic as it is a current issue which needs to be dealt with
  • When Major took over from Thatcher, he too saw the need to be pragmatic and he put aside the value of patriotism to introduce the Maastrict Treaty in the house of commons
  • Other conservative leaders such as Iain Duncan-Smith and Michael Howard saw the need for homosexual rights rather than the solitary principle of tradition
  • The willingness to accept changes such as constitutional reforms (devolution) and to be pragmatic as such in the current coalition shows that pragmatism is the core principle in tory thinking today

Evaluation

There is no doubt that the conservatives do still believe in patriotism and tradition, as they always have done since the beginning of conservatism but to a high value can be disputed. The Conservative party today have recognised the more pressing need to be pragmatic, particularly in issues regarding homosexuality and nuclear families. Whilst the party does remain sceptic of the EU and focused on the nation, core values sometimes have to be altered to adapt with the changing world, as the conservatives can be seen to be following a key principle of Burke "change in order to conserve"
