Barebones Parliament July- September 1653

Advantages

  • Opened by Cromwell, had to sit no longer than November then hand power over to a nominated body
  • Moderates wanted to remove unnecessary parts of the common law and radicals wanted to replace it with a simple written code
  • Some radicals wanted to get rid of maintained ministry (ministers being paid with public money

Disadvantages

  • Typical members 'Godly' from lower ranks of the gentry, 150 members, 100 JPs
  • Issues of tithes- seen as legal property, caused issues with moderate members
  • Lay patrons to be ended- also seen as an attack on property by radicals

Evaluation

11th December moderates met early without radicals, resigned their authority, gave powers to Cromwell and dissolved themselves
