Abortion

Advantages

  • No child should be unwanted
  • The embryo/fœtus is just a clump of cells
  • A young girl is not ready for the responsibilities of motherhood
  • Is is cruel to make a ***** woman go through with pregnancy, could be the lesser of two evils.
  • Aborting a disabled foetus is in the best interest of everyone
  • The woman has a right to chose herself
  • The woman knows what is best for her and the foetus

Disadvantages

  • No child need be unwanted. There are alternatives (mother keeping baby and having support from church organisations and family, fostering, adoption)
  • Life begins at conception
  • A young girl may not be able to deal with any long lasting guilt
  • It is wrong for those without disability to make quality of life judgement about people with disability
  • The right to autonomy should be limited as in this case the mother is making choices for someone else
  • The woman's emotional state could cloud her judgement

Evaluation

Roman Catholics believe that life starts at the moment of conception because there is movement and potential of a new life. The Anglican Church and Methodist church believe that it is wrong, however, it could be the lesser of two evils (e.g if the woman was *****)  they believe abortion should only happen when necessary (e.g baby would die soon after birth) not as a get away from responsibility (e.g because of a drunk late night out)
