Causes

  • Their crop failed due to a disease which led shortage in food supplies
  • The government agents refused to give the Indians food, claiming they had broke the treaty.
  • The government refused to pay them their annuity and the owed $1.4 million until they had to pay the traders the $200,000 they owed first.
  • Little Crow thought because of the Civil War the army wouldnt be able to intervene.
  • The Sioux were cheated by Reservation Agencys who held onto food for 3 weeks, so the sioux would pay very high prices for the food, or they would give them rotten food.

Effects

  • 400 Sioux were sentenced to death, but only 38 were executed with clear evidence against them.
  • The Sioux were moved onto a much smaller and barren reservation.
  • The barren land meant that 400 indians died in the first winter.
  • By August, they were beyond desperate,they raided food warehouses and took food and provisions and distributed it to the starving people.
  • Then they burned down the Agency buildings
  • Little Crow managed to escape with his son, bu was later shot and scalped, then later beheaded.

Overall summary

August 1862 Little Crows war was due to the attitudes of the US government, by not providing the Sioux with any food or their annuity. Little Crows tribe were dying of hunger so he took action, leading to retaliation from the US and ultimately the death of 38 Sioux and 600 settlers and soldiers.
