- Wolsey organised the 1513 expedition to France. Henry captured Therounne and Tournai.
- 1514 Louis XII became a widower. Wolsey proposed an Anglo-French alliance, secured by the marriage of Henry's sister, Mary, to Louis.
- The Field of the Cloth of Gold 1520. Henry met Francis just outside of Calais. Extravagant but achieved little diplomatically.
- War with France 1523. Wolsey didn't agree with it. Henry and Charles' plan failed so Wolsey was allowed to implement his original one.
- Pavia 1525. Charles captured Francis and Henry unsuccessfully tried to claim his title of King of France.
- Called Amicable Grant 1525 to raise funds to attack a leaderless France. Wolsey reluctant. Unpopular and unsuccessful.

- The Habsburg-Valois conflict. Charles elected HRE 1519 and soon at war with France. England in a strategic position so both sides wanted English support.
- Tudor-Habsburg alliance. Wolsey met Charles in Bruges 1521. Agreed an English army would attach France unless Francis agreed to peace.
- War with France 1523. Wolsey against. Co-ordinated allied plan with Charles.
- Pavia 1525. Charles captured Francis. Instead of giving Henry title of King of France, Charles made Francis swear a strict oath and took his sons as hostages.
- Wolsey encouraged formation of anti-imperial alliance, the League of Cognac 1526.
- English declaration of war 1528 as Charles hadn't made peace with opponents. Only a gesture.
- Treaty of Cambrai 1529.
- Negotiated between Francis and Charles to stop fighting. England included last minute.
- Highlighted how England was no longer an equal with the super powers of Europe.
