  • Utility Software
    • Software Updates
      • responsible for ensuring all software and hardware drivers are up to date
      • software will automatically check for updates when loaded
      • will often ask for permission to update
    • Security Checks
      • when logging on, details must match the ones stored for the user
        • prevents unauthorised access to sensitive files and folders
      • encrypts data that is being stored + being sent over network
      • encryption
    • Identifying and removing viruses
      • anti-virus remove files from a system that may cause damage
        • trojans
        • PUPs
        • spyware
        • ransomware
      • viruses constantly updated and created
        • users must keep anti-virus up to date
      • if no solution is available then the software will quarantine infected files
    • Cleaning up files
      • storage is divided into sections
      • when a file is deleted, the disk clean up tool removes addresses to the location
    • Backing up
      • mirror image of the current system can be created
        • previous point in the system
          • systems can set up alerts to remind the user to create back-ups
      • if anything corrupts and need to be recovered, back-ups can be reverted back to
    • Defragmentation
      • files are saved across a number of blocks
      • when a file is deleted blocks are emptied
        • when new files are saved they automatically fill in empty blocks
          • files can become fragmented, searching becomes slower
      • defragmentation stores fragmented files in a logical order and puts them back together
    • Choice of utility software
      • most operating systems integrate atleast some of these tools
        • other tools are down to users choice
      • users should base choice of utility on the jobs they need to carry out
        • a tablet user would not need print drivers if they just access the internet
    • Factors affecting performance
      • memory and processing capabilities of the PC can affect utility software
      • conflicts with other software may impact performance of the system
      • memory failure or corruption could impact a range of utilities
        • backups may not be retrievable
