- Inspector Goole arrives at the Birling's to question the characters before the suicide has been discovered
- The characters are given a chance to see the consequences of their past actions
- The character can change how they will react when an Inspector questions them the second time round
- At the end of the play the audience expects Sheila and Eric to understand what they have done and behave differently in the future.
- Mr and Mrs Birling are expected to deny any responsibility for their actions in the future
