- It is a thought experiment as it doesn't involve any real people
- It still wants to discover the cause and effect relationship
- How does it work?
- The researcher identifies two groups of people that are alike except for one variable they are interested in
- They then compare the two groups to see if this one difference between them has any effect
- E.G - Durkheim s Study on suicide
- Advantages
- no Ethical issues
- can study the past
- Avoids artificiality
- Disadvantages
- Gives the researcher less control
- Favored by Positivists
