  • The Spartan System/ Lycurgan Reforms
    • The Army
      • Had to stay in the Army for thirty years
      • Were not allowed to farm if in the Army
      • After 30 years serving, Spartians could get married and leave
      • Were Hoplite soldiers
      • Had political power
      • Syssition
        • Where you sat with 15 other people to encourage teamwork and equality etc.
      • fought with spears and used Hoplon shields
      • Slept with their companion
      • Everyone was equal in the army
    • Education
      • babies were examined at birth and if they were deformed they were thrown off the moutains
      • From 7-14 years old they left the house to join the agoge, when there they were split into packs
      • When they were 14-18 they went into intense training
        • Didn't wear shoes to help them run and climb better
      • Had one cloak all year round and their hair was cut short
    • Equality
      • Gold and silver were banned
        • Did have iron, but it was soaked in vinegar  so was valueless, this promoted equality and got rid of the boundries between rich and poor
      • They had equality because they thought it would help them to fight better together
      • The mess hall was where everyone would eat and everyone would eat the same food
      • They had equal amount of land and helots
      • Houses were simple- no-one wanted anything special because then they would be different and stand out
      • Money was valueless
    • Government
      • Two kings
        • There were two kings, and they balanced each other out
        • The two royal families were Agiads and Eurypontids
          • They did have privileges- their sons did not have to join the agoge, and when a member of the royal family died, there was an official ten days of mourning
            • They were both said to be descendants of Heracles
        • Their responsibilities were to be religious leaders, military leaders and they each had limited judical status.
      • Ecclesia and Ephors
        • The Ecclesia was the Spartan assembly. Any man over thirty was welcome.
        • The Ephors were 5 men elected by the rest of the assembly, but could only serve for a year
          • The Ephors presided over the Ecclesia, supervised the performence of the kings, acted as judges in some law cases, dealt with foreign ambassadors, declared war on the Helots once a year and ran the education system
      • Gerousia
        • 30 men. The two kings and 28 other men over 60- the 28 other men acted as advisors for the king.
          • They met monthly and listened to the views of the ephors and the kings and had to vote for/against them
