        • Lewis 1978 has pointed out that the rebuilding of the country and the growth of the manufacturing industry for new goods such as cars, televisions and washing machines meant that young working-class people had jobs and money to spend on cultural products such as records and clothes
      • High disposable income for young people
        • Most people left school at 15 and most males did national service which meant that they were able to save, they were also away from the influence of family life, whilst at the same time having money and time for fun
      • Delayed adulthood
        • People moved from school straight into employment but the average age of marriage was the mid-twenties therefore they had the freedom to delay adult responsibilities such as family life whilst at the same time having money and time for fun

        • Media companies realised that they had a whole new target market of young people with freedom and money. Films and music products, dance halls and coffee shops sprang up and all were pitched at the new teenage market. A outer space and rebel without a cause which had glamorous young actors such as James Dean as role models
      • Multi-culturalism
        • Fowler 2008 claims that people were aware of other cultures
          • Immigration into Britain such as new music styles from the Caribbean
