- Magma chamber is believed to be 80km long, 40km wide & 8km deep.
- Eruptions have occurred at this hot spot 2 million yrs ago, 1.3 million yrs ago and 630,000 yrs ago.
- Ground has risen 70cm in places over recent years.
- 10,000km3 of land erupted
- 25 mile high ash cloud
- Everything within 100 mile radius of the eruption would be destroyed
- The ash in the atmosphere could lower global temperatures by 20c
- 1000 miles away the layer of ash that will be deposited on the ground will be up to 10ft thick.
- Two thirds of USA will be uninhabitable.
- Huge impact on transport, energy, electricity & agriculture.
- The UK would receive the ash cloud 5 days after the eruption.
- The global economy would be put under huge pressure and likely to collapse due to damage to the USA.
