  • Studying the brain
    • Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
      • Detects changes in blood oxygenation  and flow as a result of neural activity in parts of the brain
      • When a brain area is more active it consumes more oxygen
        • To meet the increased demand, blood flow is also directed to that area
          • Known as the haemodynamic response
      • Produces 3 dimensional images (activation maps)
        • Shows which part of the brain is involved in a particular mental process
    • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
      • Measures electrical activity in the brain via electrodes that are fixed to individuals using a skull cap
        • Scan recording represents the brainwave patterns that are generated from the action of millions of neutrons
          • Providing an overall account of brain activity
      • Often used by clinicians as a diagnostic tool
        • Unusual arrythmatic patterns may indicate neurological abnormalities such as epilepsy, tumours or sleep disorders
    • Event-Related Potentials (ERPs)
      • Untitled
    • Post-Mortem Examinations
