- 1. noblesse d'epee lived with KIng in Versailles. Very wealthy, advisors, ambassadors.

- 2. noblesse de robe created by monarchy by selling legal/administrative offices in return for title
- 70,000 venal offices in 1789
- 3. lived on country estates, not v wealthy, dependant on feudal rights
- exempt from heaviest tax; taille (land) and corvees royales (roads)
- exempt from military conscription

- Controlled almost all education, hospitals and poor relief
- powers of censorship and published govt's messages
- Towns = clergy dominated countryside = parish priest
- Paid no taxes
- instead made annual grant of 16mill livres ; 5% of church income

- TOP: bourgeoise = lived in towns, 1789 they were growing in wealth and numbers

- COUNTRYSIDE: peasants, 80% of population, famed at subsistence level, labourers of land
- TOWNS: small property owners, skilled workers, unskilled labourers
- paid rents and taxes to seigneur
- paid taille and gabelle to state and tithe to church
