- Why?
- Fear of invasion
- Stalin had agreed to a soviet sphere of influence that was a great member at Yalta and Potsdam in Eastern Europe

- zone surrounding Russia made up of friendly communist countries and that would act as a buffer

- Stationed troops in countries
- Coalition government took key jobs, security (police), and defense (Army).
- Used jobs to arrest opposition leaders
- New elections were rigged, so communists kept winning
- Outside the polling booths were soviet soldiers with guns
- Created democracies
- Set up coalition governments
