  • Social Control
    • Formal social control
      • Government provide us with laws.
        • Break the laws and you are sanctioned to make an example, to act as a deterrent and to enforce certain behaviours/ stigmatise others
    • DURKHEIM
      • Some crime can be functional, as it reaffirms social solidarity as the collective ideas of right and wrong are reaffirmed
        • Social control is therefore essential to prevent deviance and to keep society running smoothly
          • MARXISTS argue that social control is used by capitalists to keep the working class in their place through harsh punishments and demonization
    • FOUCAULT
      • People do not need to be locked away to feel like they're being watched and controlled by the state
        • The government have commissioned so much surveillance e.g. CCTV
          • The population feel as though they are always being watched and therefore regulate their behaviour as a result
    • Informal social control
      • A more subtle form of control, that can be just as powerful and affects us in our daily lives
      • Breaking the 'unwritten' rules can be just as dangerous/ damaging  for individuals but the sanctions/ punishments are less serious
