  • Resistance To Social Influence
    • Resistance to social influence refers to the ability of people to withstand the pressure to conform or obey which is influenced by situational and dispositional factors
    • There are two ways to resist social influence 'Social Support' 'Locus of Control'
    • Social Support
      • The pressure to conform can be reduced if other people are not conforming shown in Asch, the person not conforming acts as a modal
      • Social Support can also help people resist obedience. The pressure to obey can be reduced if there is another person who is seen to disobey. Shown in the case of milgram, where obedience from 65% - 10%
    • Locus of Control
      • Rotter first proposed the concept of locus of control
      • Rotter developed a questionnaire to measure locus of control
      • There are two types of locus of control, internal and external
        • If you have an internal locus of control, you have a belief that what happens in your life results from your own behaviour or actions
          • People with an internal locus of control, feel a strong sense of control over their lives than people with an external, this means they are more likely to have independent behaviour, or less likely to conform
        • If you have an external locus of control, you have a belief that events are caused by external factors such as luck
          • People with an external locus of control are more likely to conform or obey
