- that part of the economy where jobs are created by people to try to get an income and which are not recognised in official figures
- 1) pace of rural-urban migration to fast to allow time needed to build proper houses and for economy to provide jobs
- 2) people find unoccupied areas of land and begin to build their own makeshift shelters
- 3) as there are few official jobs availiable, people create their own enployment
- selling items, making and repairing things, cleaners, gardeners, taking in laundry
