  • psychodynamic approach
    • A1. tripartite personality
      • ID- present from birth. its role is to satisfy our basic biological needs. the id continues to demand throughout life and operates on the pleasure principle.
        • conflict between these three parts of the personality can lead to problems of mental disorders
          • SUPER EGO- develops from 5 years old and produces feelings of guilt for wrong-doings and also includes an ego ideal; a guide of how we should behave and goes on the morality principle
    • A2- the unconscious mind
      • Freud said our minds are like icebergs
        • the part of the iceberg we can see- the conscious mind
          • hidden under the water is our unconscious mind
            • in-between is our preconscious mind
    • DEFENCE MECHANISMS
      • if an individual is faced with a psituation that they are ubale to solve/deal with rationally, their defence mechanism   may be triggered
        • these tend to operate unconsciously by dfistorting reality so that anxiety is reduced. by using a defence mechanism the individual stops themselves from becoming aware of any unpleasant thoughts and feelings associated with the traumatic situation

    • in-between is our preconscious mind
