- psycho dynamic describes any theory that emphasises change and development in the individual
- key theories of freud:
- defence mechanisms
- displacement= taking out frustration onto a safe object
- repression= pushing something unpleasant into the unconscious
- denial= pretending something isn't happening
- an individual may be faced with a situation that they're unable to deal with rationally, defence mechanisms may be triggered, they tend to operate unconsciously
- psychosexual stages
- Freud believed that we got pleasure from different areas of the body as we develop
- genital: (12+) pleasure gained from heterosexual relationships
- latency: (6-12 years) conflicts and issues of previous stages
- phallic: (3-6 years) pleasure gained from genitals
- Oedipus Complex= boys ant to posses their mothers for themselves, and get rid of fathers
- anal: (2-3 years) pleasure gained from bowel control
- oral: (0-2 years) pleasure we gained from sucking activities
- structure of the mind
- conscious mind= everything we are currently aware of
- unconscious mind= things that make us feel un comfortable
- preconscious mind= things we can easily access
- iceberg: the tip of the iceberg (conscious mind) being visible, larger part (unconscious) being hidden under the water

- Freud divided the mind into three structures, each demands gratification but is in conflict with the other parts
- superego= moral conscience, judgmental part- morality principle
- Id= primitive, selfish part of our personality- pleasure principle
- ego= rational part of our personality- reality principle
