  • Patterns of power
    • Uni-polar
      • One hegemon which is unchallenged by other countries
      • British Empire (1800-1919)
      • Should be stable - but there are costs including it being hard to sustain. USA have been called the policemen of the world as they deal with many trouble spots.
    • Bi-polar
      • Cold War period - USA v USSR (1945-1990) Almost ended up in a 'hot' war.
      • involves a tense stand-off between opposing powers. High risk, scary but stable.
    • Multi-polar
      • Inter-war period (1919-1939)
      • no dominant power. it is argued that this created a power vacuum with nazi Germany and imperial Japan, where no one was prepared to stop them.
    • future?
      • Maybe bi-polar (China and USA)
      • Maybe multi-polar (China, USA, EU, India).
