  • Ozymandias
    • Power shown in title
      • 'Mandias' from the Greek word 'mandate' - to rule
    • Shelley a 2nd Generation Romantic poet
      • Embraced nature, was a pacifist
    • Written during reign of King George 3rd, who was involved in many conflicts around world.
      • Ramesses 2nd (known as Ozymandias) was Egyptian Pharoah.
        • He led many battles to protect Egypt and to extend borders - similar to King George 3rd.
    • Enjambment - slow pace, dragged out, no energy.
    • Plethora of negative language - is an attack and not praise of powerful.
      • 'Sunk', 'shattered', 'frown', 'wrinkled', 'sneer'
    • 'Mocked' - can mean made, can mean making fun of.
      • Puts sculpture above, as Ozymandias did not spot mockery.
        • Could be metaphor for himself. Poetry outlives the powerful and his poems more famous now than 200 years ago.
    • 'King of Kings' - title given to Jesus, blasphemous
      • Sees himself as better than God.
      • Shelley mocking- was expelled from Oxford for writing about atheism
        • What he deems to be 'fake religion' still lasts longer than him.
    • 3 types of sonnet in poem
      • Petrarchan (octave and sestet present details of statue and then lack of power).
      • Shakesperare-an (rhyme scheme of first 4 lines).
      • New (rhyme scheme of last 10 lines). All power ultimately gives way to new power.
        • Nothing remains forever, not even form of sonnet.
