- Screens and monitors
- CRT
- Cathode ray tubes that fire electrons at a screen to make each pixel glow in the correct colour.
- TFT
- Thin film transistor - thinner than CRT. They use liquid crystals to form the image.
- Large displays
- Digital projectors
- Used to project a large version of the monitor output onto a screen so that it can be viewed by a larger audience.
- Interactive whiteboards
- They have a touch-sensitive surface that can be 'written on' using a stylus shaped like a pen or a finger.
- Plasma screens
- Often used as TVs, but can be computer monitors. They work by illuminating tiny fluorescent lights to make the image.
- Digital projectors
- Small displays
- Mobile phone screens
- Require a good quality image that refreshes quickly
- PDAs
- Larger screens than phones

- Printers
- Laser printers
- Image is formed on the page using a laser beam on a light-sensitive drum that uses electrostatic charges to attract toner particles. A heating element then fuses the toner particles onto the page
- Use CMYK toner colours. High quality documents, lower quality images.
- Dot-matrix printers
- The main use is to print on multipart stationary. Usually used when high-volume is needed and high-quality isn't important.
- Use heated wires and heat-sensitive paper to produce text that is of fairly low quality and tends to fade over time.
- Inkjet printers
- Very popular for home use as they're cheaper than laser printers. However they're more expensive to run than laser printers and they generally are slower.
- Higher quality images, lower quality documents.
- They work by spraying colours onto a sheet of paper.
- Multi-function printers
- Include a built-in scanner and can be used as a photocopier.
- Generally use inkjet technology rather than laser.
- Laser printers
- Speakers
- Play sounds and music produced by the sound card.
- Many monitors and laptops have built in speakers that play sound of relatively low quality suitable for general purpose use.
