  • Origins and Meanings
    • The Origin of the Universe
      • St Augustine
        • Creation Ex Nihilo in his Enchiridion. God created something out of nothing. God is omnipotent and the creator of everything. this stems from the belief in Genesis. "You created this out of nothing"
        • St Augustines confessions were written for more educated people and it expands on Christian views first shown in Genesis.
      • Genesis
        • some Christians believe that everything in the bible is fact, and therefore that God created the universe in 6 days and rested on the 7th. these are Literal Christians.
        • some Christians believe that Genesis is just a story that we can understand the nature of God from but isn't factual or true.
          • "So God created man in his own image". God loves us and created us like him. He is the ideal person that we should aspire to be. Therefore human life is sacred.
          • "God saw all that he had made and it was very good". Shows that god has power (omnipotent) and that he is all good (omnibenevolent)
          • "The heavens declare the glory of God" "Night after night they display knowledge". There is part of God in all of creation. He is also omniscient (all knowing)
          • From the Catechism "his almighty love and his wisdom". Shows God created the universe out of love, and that we should take care of the earth because of this.
      • The Big Bang Theory
        • a theory because it cannot be proven as true
        • first put forward by a Catholic priest, Fr Georges Lemaitre, and was famously developed by Stephen Hawking
        • Catholics are happy to accept the Big Bang Theory, as the theory supports their belief that God created the universe. They say the big bang is how the universe was created and God is why.
        • Some Christians (literalists) say that the theory is an attack on their religion, and they would say that God created the earth and everything in it in 6 days, as it says in Genesis
      • Evolution
        • evolution is the process of mutation and natural selection that leads to changes in a species over time.
        • The idea was presented by Charles Darwin, who was a Catholic himself.
        • Catholics follow what Pope Pius XII who says 'there is no conflict between evolution and the doctrine of the faith regarding man
          • Pope John Paul II restated these views
          • It is important for Catholics to know not how God created the universe, but that he did it with love and care for everything in it. This is purposeful creation

            • they believe that a foetus has a right to life and that termination of that life is morally wrong.
            • The Catholic church would encourage adoption insated
              • this would be seen as pro life
          • If the mothers life is in danger during the pregnancy, Catholics would allow an abortion under the Doctrine of Double Effect
            • They would say that this is acceptable as the intention is to save the mother, not to kill the child. the death of the foetus is a side effect of saving the mother
            • An example is an ectopic pregnancy
        • Some more liberal Christian groups say that abortion is permissible as they may say life begins at birth, or they think that if the woman is suffering because of the pregnancy, then the pregnancy can be terminated in order to relieve the immediate suffering.
          • For example, the Methodist Church says that 'termination as soon as possible may be the lesser of two evils'
            • this is pro choice
              • this would be seen as pro life
        • Humanists are often pro-choice. They think that the mother has control over her own body and can choose what to do with it
