  • Kamikaze
    • Simile "He must have looked far down at the little fishing boats strung out like bunting"
      • Looking down shows his power and bravery, leaving behind his family and home
      • People have to look up to him- respect him, shows he is heroic
      • Bunting is used as a celebratory so the community is joyful and happy which contrasts with where he is going
      • He is leaving a joyful place behind and entering his death
      • Ironic that the natural world seems to celebrate his death as war is unnatural
      • His heroism/ sacrifice are emphasised and it tempts him to stay
      • He's protecting/ having a 'father like role' to the people left behind
      • It's ironic because his own children reject him later
      • He is leaving behind a natural/ simple life for war
      • It is possible at this point that the people he has left behind are insignificant and he is superior as he is saving the country
      • The bunting catches the eye as it is the last joyful reminder of home
      • The bunting also looks like it is waving goodbye
      • The bunting represents the pilots because they are in their own plane but are working as a team
      • The way bunting is placed out is like how they are treating the pilots
    • Listing "The loose silver of whitebait and once a tuna, the dark prince, muscular, dangerous"
      • 'Loose'- expendable change- connects to the lack of the value to the pilots
      • 'Tuna' is dominant, like the enemy
      • 'Dark Prince'- unknown power
      • 'Tuna' unnoticed- like the pilot. This changes when he enlists
      • 'Tuna' represents the government and the 'whitebait' represents the pilots
      • 'Muscular'- the bombs make the planes a threat to be feared
    • Foreshadowing "dark shoals of fishes flashing silver as their bellies swivelled towards the sun"
      • relaxed, floating fish enjoys the warmth of the sun. Contrast to the conflict
      • 'Dark'- mystery and death
      • The fish are like predators- symbolises the enemy planes in formation
      • The fish (dark) represent the enemy and the silver (Japanese)
      • Silver- metal on the plane catches the sun, just as the scales catch the sun. Sun represents hope/ light/ comfort/ heaven
      • Conflict interferes with the natural world
      • Dark/ silver- like the planes/ people- only 'shine' when they are deceased
