- This is the giving and taking of electrons
- When an element gives electrons it will become positively charged
- When it takes an electron it will become negatively charged
- When reacting sodium and chlorine, sodium loses an electron making it positive and chlorine gains that one so will make it negative. This forms sodium chloride
