- Inherited Disorders
- Polydactyly
- When babies are born with extra fingers or toes
- Most common form caused by a dominant allele
- Inherited from parents
- Can be removed
- Polydactyly + heterozygous = 50% chance of passing on to your children
- Half of your gametes contain the faulty dominant allele
- Polydacyly + homozygus = 100% chance of passing on to your children
- Some genetic disorders are more harmful than others like Huntington's
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Afects many organs in the body especially the lungs, digestive & reproductive system
- Disorder of cell membrane that prevents movement of certain substances from one side to another
- Mucus made by cells in many areas of body becomes thick & sticky
- Organs can become clogged preventing them working
- Pancreas can't make & secrete enzymes properly because tubes to small intestine are blocked
- Reproductive system affected so many infertile
- Treatment includes physiotherapy & antibiotics
- Enzymes used to replace ones pancreas can't produce & thin mucus
- No cure
- Caused by recessive allele inherited from both parents
- Parents usually don't have the disorder
- Have dominant healthy allele
- Carriers
- 1 in 25 carry cystic fibrosis allele in UK
- Parents usually don't have the disorder
- Curing Genetic Disorders
- No way to cure genetic disorders yet
- Hope genetic engineering will be the answer
- Replace faulty alleles with healthy ones
- Scientists working on gene replacement for cystic fibrosis
- Polydactyly
