    • Local Area Network (LAN)
      • This connects all the computers in the house so that resources can be shared.
        • Benefits of a home network
          • Sharing the internet connection.
          • Sharing files, including backing up files.
          • Sharing peripherals, for example printers, keyboards, mice etc.
          • Internet telephone services.
    • Routers
      • The router connects all of the computers to the modem an internal IP address so that it knows where to send the data.
    • Types of network
      • Cable connection to router.
        • Advantages
          • (Bandwidth) Very fast: 1 gigabit per second (GBPS).
          • (Security) Good: a user would need to physically plug their computer into the network with a cable.
          • (Interference) Should not experience interference.
        • Disadvantages
          • (Cost) Installation is expensive.
          • (Setting up) Cables have to be run from the router to all rooms in the house.
          • (Mobility) You cannot connect in a room without a socket. You have to unplug and reconnect if you want to move to a different room.
      • Wireless connection to router.
        • Advantages
          • (Setting up) All you need is a wireless router.
          • Cheaper than cable connection: only the cost of the router.
          • (Mobility) You can access the network from anywhere in the house and you can stay connected moving from room to room.
        • Disadvantages
          • (Bandwidth) Slower: 54 megabits per second (MBPS).
          • (Security) Poor: anyone within range can use it unless kept secure with a security password or key.
          • (Interference) Can be affected by walls, electronic equipment, distance from router and number of computers connected.
