- Rates vary in different parts - head circumference quickest in first 2 months
- Rate not smooth but continuous - periods of rapid growth - PUBERTY and INFANCY
- Infants - rapid in first 6 months
- Height increase = weight increase
- Healthy newborns - double weight by 4-5 months
- Infants - av. growth - 12 cm and gain 2.5 kg between 1-2
- 2 - Healthy infant = approx. half adult height
- Health visitors - monitor against milestones - follow normal patterns
- Increase in some measured quantity e.g Height / Weight

- Inside to Outside - Infants - control of: Bodies / arms and legs / smaller muscles in fingers
- Head to Toe - Infants - control of: Head / Body (sit) / Legs (Crawl and Walk)
- Journey - expected milestones - development norms - expected by a particular age

- Important to remember - every child unique - some may develop milestones quicker than others
- Complex changes - increase in skills, abilities and capabilities
