Group 7 - Halogens

View mindmap
  • Group 7 - Halogens
    • Non-metals with coloured vapours
      • Florine - very reactive - poisonous yellow gas
      • Chlorine - farily reactive - pisonous desne green gas
      • Bromine - dense, poisonous, red-brown volatile liquid
      • Iodine - dark grey crystalline solid or purple vapour
    • All are molecules (pairs of atoms)
    • As you go down group:
      • Less reactive (more shells - further distance from nuclues - less attraction - harder to gain electron)
        • Higher MP / BP
        • Higher relative atomic mass
    • Have seven electrons on outer shell
      • Form ion -1 (ionic compounds)
      • React similiarly
    • Halogens form molecular compounds
      • Share electrons (covalent bonds) with other non-metals
    • They form ionic bonds with metals
      • From 1- ions called halides
        • Compounds formed have ionic structure
    • More reactive halogens displace less reactive
      • Can occur between more reactive halogens  and aslt of a less reactive one
        • Chloine displases bromide and iodide from awueous solution of it's salt
