      • 1885-1913 real wages rose by over 30%    =especially in Prussia
      • mortality fell due to better hygiene     =longer lives by10 years from 1870s-1900s

    • urban society
      • rapid urbanisatio =by 1910 2/3 of Gs lived in towns
        • 1/3 of G pop. fell on or below poverty line
          • serious lack of urban housing= homelessness

      • large influx of immigrants: Poles, Italians, Dutch
      • non agricultural worker had 9.5hr work day and conditions very poor
        • state socialism and Caprivi;s new course gave some benefits
    • rural society
      • 100hr weeks for low wages in agriculture so city was attractive
      • families exploited child labour as labour shortage
        • medically disadv. = rural children more likely to die by 1
      • 1907-= over 7 mil agri. workers
      • agricultural prices increased so workers better dressed and housed
