  • Restless Earth
    • Structure
      • Inner Core: Solid - Iron and nickel - 5500 degrees
      • Mantle:   2900 Km thick - Semi molten rock (Magma)
      • Crust: 60 Km thick - Solid rock - Continental & Oceanic
        • Oceanic Crust: Under Oceans - Igneous rock - 6-8 C, thick - 3.3 Density
        • Continental Crust: Forms land - Granite - 30-50 Km thick - 2.7 Density
    • Plate Boundaries
      • Collision:(Eurasian Plates) Rocks on the ocean bed are pushed together, which forms mountains.
      • Conservative: (Pacific & N America) Two plates move against each other, causing friction.
      • Destructive: (Nazca & S America) One plate [oceanic] is forced under the other [Continental]. Causes friction in the subduction zone and can cause volcanic eruptions.
        • ANDESITIC: Low temp - High gas - Less fluid - Explosive
        • GRANITIC: Low temp - Viscous - Cools underground
      • Constructive: (Eurasian & N America) Plates move apart, magma flows into the gap and cools. Can create volcanic islands
        • BASALTIC: Low gas content - Liquid - Not explosive
    • Earthquake Management
      • Sustainable Buildings & Safety drills
      • Supplies, Early evacuation, turn off gas
      • Siesometers, Warning systems
    • Volcanoes
      • Shield: Gently sloping sides - Basaltic - Rarely violent
      • Composite: Layers of ash and lava - Steep sides - Andesitic lava
