  • Functionalism
    • Malinowski agrees with Durkheim that religion promotes solidarity
      • In his view it does so by causing psychological functions for individuals, helping them to cope with the emotional stress that would undermine social solidarity
        • Where the outcome is important but uncontrollable and thus uncertain. In his study of trobiand islanders, malinowski contrasts fishing in the lagoon to fishing in the ocean
          • Lagoon fishing is safe & uses the predictable/successful method of poisoning, no rituals are used here
    • Parsons says that religion helps individuals to cope with unforeseen events and uncontrollable  circumstances
      • He identifies 2 essential functions of religion:it creates & legitimates society's central norms & values, it is the primary source of meaning
