  • Experimental design
    • Repeated measures
      • Definition: Where all participants take part in all conditions of an experiment.
      • Strengths
        • Results will not be subject to individual differences between ppts.
        • Puts more confidence that dv changes are solely due to manipulation of iv.
          • Results will not be subject to individual differences between ppts.
      • Weaknesses
        • Risk of observing order effects e.g. fatigue of ppts.
    • Independent measures
      • Definition: Where different ppts take part in one different experimental condition.
      • Strengths
        • Order effects cannot be observed as no ppts will be used for more than one condition.
        • Data collection will be less time consuming if all conditions of the experiment can be conducted at the same time.
      • Weaknesses
        • Different ppts need to be recruited for each condition
          • This is time consuming and expensive.
    • Matched pairs
      • Definition: Where ppts take part in only one experimental condition, but are recruited to be similar in characteristics to matched ppts in other conditions e.g. IQ, age, gender.
      • Strengths
        • Order effects cannot be observed.
      • Weaknesses
        • Matching ppts is difficult
        • Different ppts need to be recruited for each condition- expensive and time consuming.
