- Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes
- Eukaryotic cells
- Found in plants, animals, fungi and protists
- 10-100 micrometers in size
- A eukaryote is an organism made up of eukaryotic cells
- KEY FEATURES
- Cell membrane
- Separates the interior of a cell from the outside
- Selectively permeable membrane - controls the substances that pass through it
- Cytoplasm
- Jelly-like fluid outside of the nucleus
- Cell's chemical reactions take place here
- Nucleus
- Control centre of the cell
- Contains the genetic material in the form of chromosomes
- Cell membrane
- Prokaryotic cells
- 0.1-5.0 micrometers in size
- A prokaryote is an organism made up of prokaryotic cells
- Bacteria are prokaryotes
- KEY FEATURES
- No nucleus
- Do not have a nucleus (where DNA is stored)
- Genetic material is stored in a single DNA loop in the cytoplasm
- Plasmids
- May have one or more small rings of DNA (plasmids)
- Plasmids can replicate (have copies made) and move between cells so genetic information can be shared
- No mitochondria or chloroplasts
- Do not contain mitochondria (where respiration takes place) or chloroplasts (where photosynthesis takes place)
- No nucleus
- Eukaryotic cells
