  • Energy
    • Storing and transferring
      • everything stores energy. the more energy things store the more they can do. energy is measured in joules (j).
      • when anything happens energy is transferred (moved) from on place to another. it cannot appear or disappear.
    • Evaporation and pressure
      • Energy is not a physical substance. in a chemical reaction, the mass of chemicals before and after is the same, but the amount of energy is different.
      • We detect energy being transferred or stored in different places in different ways. However, energy cannot exist in different forms.
    • Many things affect the rate of global warming. One theory is that sea water is dark coloured and will absorb infrared radiation from the sun faster than ice does.
    • Infrared radiation
      • We can design objects to reduce the rate of energy transfer.
      • Hotter surfaces emit radiation faster than cooler surfaces.
      • All objects emit and absorb infrared radiation.
      • Shiny light coloured surfaces absorb infrared radiation slower than black matt surfaces.
    • Efficiency of a device is the useful energy output divided by total energy input
