  • Elizabeth Barrett Browning
    • Born in 1806 in Durham
    • She was from a wealthy family
    • She was not a well child, she suffered from problems with her lungs and spine
    • Because she was ill she had to take Laudanum
      • Drug containing opium
      • Also bad for her health, but Victorians didn't realise this
    • Alone in her room a lot so she studied many languages and wrote poetry
    • As a young woman she used her poetry to criticise social injustices such as child labour and slavery
      • Ironic as father used slaves on his sugar plantation
    • When slavery was abolished, her father lost a lot of money and the family had to move to London
    • The London smog made her breathing worse and she was advised to visit the seaside for sea air
      • Invited her brother to come with her, but he drowned in a sailing accident whilst there
        • Blamed herself for his death and returned to London and shut herself away in her room
    • In 1845 she received a letter from Robert Browning telling her how much he liked her poetry
      • Letters became increasingly romantic, and when they finally met, he asked her to marry him
        • They ran away to marry in Italy due to her father
          • They had a son together
    • Died in 1861 in Italy due to health problems
