- She was not a well child, she suffered from problems with her lungs and spine
- Because she was ill she had to take Laudanum

- Also bad for her health, but Victorians didn't realise this
- Alone in her room a lot so she studied many languages and wrote poetry
- As a young woman she used her poetry to criticise social injustices such as child labour and slavery
- Ironic as father used slaves on his sugar plantation
- When slavery was abolished, her father lost a lot of money and the family had to move to London
- The London smog made her breathing worse and she was advised to visit the seaside for sea air
- Invited her brother to come with her, but he drowned in a sailing accident whilst there
- Blamed herself for his death and returned to London and shut herself away in her room
