    • stage 1: original DNA molecule unwinds
    • stage 2: weak hydrogen bonds between two bases are breaking
      • the two strands of DNA separate
    • stage 3: pairing of two bases allows a free DNA nucleotide to find and align with complementary nucleotide on the open chain
    • stage 4: weak hydrogen bonds are forming between complementary base pairs
    • stage 5: a strong chemical bond forms between the sugar and one nucleotide and the phosphate of the next
      • gives a sugar-phosphate 'backbone'
      • controlled by the enzyme DNA polymerase
    • stage 6: newly formed molecule of DNA winds up into a double relix
      • daughter molecules have a base sequence identical to one another and to the original DNA molecule
