- DNA Replication
- stage 1: original DNA molecule unwinds
- stage 2: weak hydrogen bonds between two bases are breaking
- the two strands of DNA separate
- stage 3: pairing of two bases allows a free DNA nucleotide to find and align with complementary nucleotide on the open chain
- stage 4: weak hydrogen bonds are forming between complementary base pairs
- stage 5: a strong chemical bond forms between the sugar and one nucleotide and the phosphate of the next
- gives a sugar-phosphate 'backbone'
- controlled by the enzyme DNA polymerase
- stage 6: newly formed molecule of DNA winds up into a double relix
- daughter molecules have a base sequence identical to one another and to the original DNA molecule
