Diffusion

  • Diffusion
    • General
      • The spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
      • Happens in solutions and in gases- particles are free to move around randomly
      • The bigger the difference in concentration, the faster the diffusion rate
    • Cell Membranes
      • Dissolved substances can move in and out of cells by diffusion
        • Only small molecules- oxygen, glucose, amino acids and water
      • Moleules like Starch and Proteins can't fit through the membrane
      • Particles flow through the membrane from where there is high concentration to where ther's a low concentration
      • If there are a lot more particles on one side of the membrane, there's a net movement from that side
