- Diffusion
- General
- The spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
- Happens in solutions and in gases- particles are free to move around randomly
- The bigger the difference in concentration, the faster the diffusion rate
- Cell Membranes
- Dissolved substances can move in and out of cells by diffusion
- Only small molecules- oxygen, glucose, amino acids and water
- Moleules like Starch and Proteins can't fit through the membrane
- Particles flow through the membrane from where there is high concentration to where ther's a low concentration
- If there are a lot more particles on one side of the membrane, there's a net movement from that side
- Dissolved substances can move in and out of cells by diffusion
