  • Developments (The revolution) July-October 1789
    • Town and cities set up revolutionary committees and a National Guard; as Paris had done. Intendants abandoned their posts as royal authority collapsed.
    • The Great Fear
      • Countryside violence in response to food prices caused by a bad harvest in 88. News of the king's surrender and defeat of the nobility triggered the fear. Rumours spread of brigands destroying the harvest. Few people were killed but signs of feudal power were desroyed.
        • Brigands: Gangs of robbers operating in area where the forces if law and order were weak.
    • The abolition of feudalism
      • News of violence reaches NA. They want to crush rural revolt without royal troops for their own safety. They gained the support of the peasants by abolishing feudalism.
      • August Decrees:
        • August 4th 89
        • 1) Feudal rights on people were abolished.
        • 2) Tithes, hunting rights, seigneurial courts, all abolished.
        • 3) All citizens were to be taxed equally.
        • 4) All were eligible for any office in the church, state or army.
      • Declaration of the Rights of Man and he Citizen
        • August 26th 89
        • All citizens were equal. These decrees formally dismantled the Anicien Regime.
    • The October Days
      • Suspensory veto allowed for Louis = delay laws up to four years. Shows want for a constitutional monarchy
        • veto:
          • Constitutional right to reject a proposal by a law-making body.
        • Constitutional monarchy:
          • Political system where the powers of the monarch are limited by a constitution.
      • Causes:
        • National Guard could not maintain order.
        • Journalists Desmoulins and Marat portrayed supporters of the veto unpatriotic.
          • Marat:
            • Radical revolutionary journalist implicated in the September Massacres. His impeachment was a key factor in the fall of the Girondins,
        • Louis summons troops to Versailles and refuses some of the August Decrees whilst questioning the Dec of Man and Citizen.
      • Women in Paris march on Versailles. Louis forced to agree to August Decrees They threaten the queen and the royal family are forced to go to Paris. Prisoners.
