- Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia had been under French rule for decades
- French were defeated in 1954 at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu
- Vietminh sent 50000 troops + artillery and surrounded the French from the hills (surprise attack)
- During WWII Japan invaded Vietnam but they were defeated by the Vietminh
- Vietminh was a nationalist, communist group led by Ho Chi Minh
- Japan was forced out of the country so the French tried to take over again
- They fought the Vietminh for 8 years, funded by the US who gave $3billion

- North - communist under Ho Chi Minh, South - capitalist under President Diem
