    • French Indo China
      • Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia had been under French rule for decades
      • French were defeated in 1954 at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu
        • Vietminh sent 50000 troops + artillery and surrounded the French from the hills (surprise attack)
      • During WWII Japan invaded Vietnam but they were defeated by the Vietminh
        • Vietminh was a nationalist, communist group led by Ho Chi Minh
      • Japan was forced out of the country so the French tried to take over again
        • They fought the Vietminh for 8 years, funded by the US who gave $3billion
    • Geneva Agreement
      • Signed in 1954
      • Agreement to split Vietnam along the 17th parallel
        • North - communist under Ho Chi Minh, South - capitalist under President Diem
      • Said that Vietnam would hold elections in 1956 to untie Vietnam under one of the governments
        • Diem never held these as he was scared Ho Chi Minh would win
          • USA supported him in doing this - he was very unpopular and likely to lose the elections
      • China and USA were unhappy with the agreement
    • Increasing  USA involvement
      • Caused by paranoia about communists
      • They had to help Diem's government because they were 'incompetent and deeply unpopular'
        • Favoured Catholics minority and persecuted Buddhists
        • Took land from peasants to give to his supporters
      • Gave money to S Vietnamese government and sent special advisers to train the ARVN
      • Made strategic hamlets to protect them from NLF who killed government officials and supporters
        • Very unpopular because they unsafe and ignored Vietnamese culture
      • Diem assassinated in 1963 so US had to intervene more
    • Send in the Marines
      • Started Operation Rolling Thunder in February 1965 and sent in US Marines
        • LBJ had about 200,000 troops but this increased to over 500,000 by 1968
      • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was passed, allowing LBJ to do whatever he thought necessary
