- Clinical Infectious Disease Process
- Stage 2: Prodromal Stage
- The appearance of initial symptoms which are often mild including feeling of discomfort and tiredness
- Pathogen continues multiplying, host will now experience some symptoms of illness
- Causes activation of the immune system!
- Symptoms: Headache, fever, pain, soreness, swelling or inflammation
- The appearance of initial symptoms which are often mild including feeling of discomfort and tiredness
- Stage 3: Invasion Period
- The pathogen is multiplying rapidly, invading further, affecting tissues at site of initial colonization
- Immune & inflammatory responses being triggered
- Signs & symptoms of disease are the most obvious and severe
- Symptoms develop specifically to the pathogen! Alongside this symptoms related to protective inflammatory response
- The pathogen is multiplying rapidly, invading further, affecting tissues at site of initial colonization
- Stage 1: Incubation Period
- The interval between exposure to an infectious agent & the appearance of first symptoms
- Microorganism entered individual & began multiplying
- Insufficient numbers of microorganisms to cause symptoms
- May last several hours, days or years depending on the infection
- The interval between exposure to an infectious agent & the appearance of first symptoms
- Stage 4: Convalescence
- Individuals immune/inflammatory systems have successfully removed infectious agent
- Symptoms decline
- HOWEVER! The disease may be fatal or may enter a latency phase
- Latency phase = resolution of symptoms until reactivation at another time
- Individuals immune/inflammatory systems have successfully removed infectious agent
- Stage 2: Prodromal Stage
