    • Stage 2: Prodromal Stage
      • The appearance of initial symptoms which are often mild including feeling of discomfort and tiredness
        • Pathogen continues multiplying, host will now experience some symptoms of illness
        • Causes activation of the immune system!
        • Symptoms: Headache, fever, pain, soreness, swelling or inflammation
    • Stage 3: Invasion Period
      • The pathogen is multiplying rapidly, invading further, affecting tissues at site of initial colonization
        • Immune & inflammatory responses being triggered
        • Signs & symptoms of disease are the most obvious and severe
        • Symptoms develop specifically to the pathogen! Alongside this symptoms related to protective inflammatory response
    • Stage 1: Incubation Period
      • The interval between exposure to an infectious agent & the appearance of first symptoms
        • Microorganism entered individual & began multiplying
        • Insufficient numbers of microorganisms to cause symptoms
        • May last several hours, days or years depending on the infection
    • Stage 4: Convalescence
      • Individuals immune/inflammatory systems have successfully removed infectious agent
        • Symptoms decline
        • HOWEVER! The disease may be fatal or may enter a latency phase
