- Clinical Infectious Disease Process
- Incubation Period
- The interval between exposure to an infectious agent and the appearance of the first symptoms
- Micro-organism has entered the individual, undergone colonisation and begun multiplying
- Insufficient numbers to cause symptoms
- Prodromal stage
- The appearance of initial symptoms which are often mild including feeling tired and discomfort
- Pathogen continues to multiply and the host begins to experience general signs and symptoms of illness
- Typically a result from activation of immune system such as fever, swelling, pain etc
- Invasion period
- The pathogen is multiplying rapidly, invading further tissues at site of initial colonisation and other areas
- Immune and inflammatory responses being triggered
- Development of symptoms specifically related to the pathogen and symptoms related to inflammatory response
- Convales-cence period
- Individuals immune and inflammatory systems have in general successfully removed infectious agent
- Symptoms decline
- However the disease may be fatal or enter the latency phase - resolution of symptoms until reactivation at another time
- Incubation Period
