- Chemistry Year 10
- Separating Mixtures
- Distillation
- Separates liquids with different boiling ponts
- Liquid heats, evaporates, cools
- Waters boiling point: 100°C
- Ethanol evaporates at 79°C
- Chromatography
- Used to separate pigments from a mixture
- Solvent (eg. Water) soaks into paper and moves upwards
- Soluble substances in the mixture dissolve and travel up the paper with the solvent.
- Substances can be identified by how far they have travelled.
- Filtration
- Insoluble solid from a liquid
- Eg. Sand from water
- Insoluble solid from a liquid
- Evaporation
- Soluble solid from a liquid
- Eg. Salt from salt water
- Soluble solid from a liquid
- Distillation
- Atomic Structure & the Periodic Table
- Atoms
- Positively charged nucleus, negative electrons orbiting
- Number of protons = Number of electrons
- No overall electrical charge
- Atomic number = number of protons
- Mass number = number of protons and neutrons
- Isotope = atoms of the same element with different number of neutrons but same amount of protons and electrons
- Arrangement of the Periodic Table
- Groups vertically across
- Number of electrons on outer shell shows what group
- Elements in the same group have similar properties
- Periods horizontal
- Number of shells show what period
- Metals are on the left side and centre, non metals on the right
- Metals on the dividing line are called metalloids
- Properties of metals and non metals
- Metals on the dividing line are called metalloids
- Groups vertically across
- Ion = charged atom (gained or lost and electron)
- Losing or gaining more than one electron is harder that just losing one. Therefore group 2 and 6 elements are less reactive than groups 1 and 7
