- Chemistry- C2
- Elements & Compounds
- element- A substance that is made up of one type of atom. for example copper is made from just copper atoms
- compound- contains two or more elements that are chemically combined. it is different from the element that it is formed from
- mixture- a substance that are not chemically joined together and can be separated
- Ionic Bonding
- In ionic bonding, the atoms involved lose or gain electrons to form charged particles called ions
- the ions have the electronic structure of a noble gas.
- gaining or losing electrons-ionic bonds (between metals and non-metals)
- ions bond by an electrostatic charge
- Covalent bonding
- sharing electrons-covalent bonding (between non-metals only)
- covalent bonds are strong and need a lot of energy to break them
- Metals
- metals are shiny, good conductors, sonorous, malleable and strong
- non- metals are dull, non-sonorous, brittle and poor conductors
- metallic bonding- a metal is a lattice of positively charged ions
