  • Chemistry- C2
    • Elements & Compounds
      • element- A substance that is made up of one type of atom. for example copper is made from just copper atoms
      • compound- contains two or more elements that are chemically combined. it is different from the element that it is formed from
      • mixture- a substance that are not chemically joined together and can be separated
    • Ionic Bonding
      • In ionic bonding, the atoms involved lose or gain electrons to form charged particles called ions
      • the ions have the electronic structure of a noble gas.
      • gaining or losing electrons-ionic bonds (between metals and non-metals)
      • ions bond by an electrostatic charge
    • Covalent bonding
      • sharing electrons-covalent bonding (between non-metals only)
      • covalent bonds are strong and need a lot of energy to break them
    • Metals
      • metals are shiny, good conductors, sonorous, malleable and strong
      • non- metals are dull, non-sonorous, brittle and poor conductors
      • metallic bonding- a metal is a lattice of positively charged ions
